Il Carnevale

| The Carnival was first staged in 1873 and has conquered a worldwide attention, just like the Brazilian Rio de Janeiro’s happening. Its triumph carts, made of wood, canary grass and jute, modelled by sculptors and set up by the best carpenters and craftsmen of the upcoming ship industry were produced by the end of the 19th Century. |

| In 1925 some builders introduced papier-maché, a new artwork made of water, glue, chalk and paper. The introduction of the tracing technique, with its formal innovations, enhanced the builders’ creativity and let them invent new cart projects, dealing with masses and volumes much bigger than the previous ones. The history of Viareggio’s Carnival turns thus out to a legend: in 1930 Uberto Bonetti, the painter illustrating Carnival’s magic in official posters, drawed Burlamacco, the official Viareggio’s Carnival mask, a clown wearing a puzzle of costumes taken from the Italian Art Comedy characters. Today Burlamacco is showed among the Italian masks at the National Art and Popular Traditions Museum in Rome, and it is even displayed at the Musée de l'Homme in Paris. |

Festival Europa Cinema
www.europacinema.it |
Europa Cinema Festival was founded in Rimini in 1984 by Felice Laudadio and then moved in 1989 to Viareggio. It came out thanks to the collaboration of Federico Fellini himself, who designed both its logo and its first poster, then followed each year by the ones realized by Michelangelo Antonioni, Tonino Guerra, Ettore Scola, Marcello Mastroianni and Ingmar Bergman.
It soon became one of the most authoritative European festivals, considered by producers, distributors and actors to be an effective alternative to the Venice movie exhibition. It has presented in world or Italian previews hundreds of the main continental and international films. |
